The subway and bus are a great way to get around NYC, and you can use a MetroCard on both. But, make sure not to bend your MetroCard otherwise it is inoperable.
Flagging taxis in NYC is pretty easy as long as the light on top of the taxi is on. If the light is on, the taxi is available. If the light is off, you'll have to wait for the next one.
